In memoriam Glenna Hartmann PSA

Angles-sur-Anglin Glenna Hartmann passed away on 12th June. 2008, at just 60 years of age. Her exhibition calendar was full up to October 2008; her August and September workshops were postponed, new dates poignantly “TBA” on her website.

I first met Glenna Hartmann through the pages of the Pastel Journal - issue No.3 featured her work on the cover. I never had the opportunity to meet her in life, but I almost feel I know her. I have stood on the very spot where she must have set up her easel to paint the lovely French village of Angles-sur-Anglin. I believe she enjoyed reading Sue Grafton – me too!

Glenna enjoyed painting the historic ranchos and remote ranchlands of Santa Barbara and Marin counties. She worked as as plein-air painter, completing about 80% of her work on location. On her website her paintings were organised by location too – California, Channel Islands, Sierra, Carolina, France. She also collaborated closely with her good friend Ellen Easton in the realization of a series of books published by the Easton Gallery in Santa Barbara, where her work was represented for 18 years. The Easton Gallery is handling Glenna’s estate and there are paintings by Glenna still available through the gallery.

Every true artist expresses and reveals themselves in their paintings; and Glenna’s beautiful paintings reveal a beautiful mind, a sweet spirit, a generous heart. She said in her inteview with Maggie Price: "I want my paintings to be a refuge. They are a refuge for me." For others too.

This generosity was manifest in her website, where she allowed her paintings to be freely downloaded, without watermark or disable code. I don’t know how long the site can remain online without maintenance - NOTE 27.12.2011: The website no longer exists.

As we say in Ireland, ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a h-anam geal – may her shining soul be at God’s right hand.
