Name: Carol Santora, PSA
Bio: Carol Santora has loved animals of all kinds since she was a child, and always wanted to be
an artist. Santora began her formal art training in 1983 while working as a
registered nurse, and graduated with a BFA, summa cum laude, from Framingham
State University. After a first successful portrait of her dog, Flossie,
Santora realized she had a special talent and passion for animal and wildlife
portraiture. Over the next 20 years, Santora would explore oil and watercolor
painting before settling on soft pastel as her perfect medium. She painted
landscapes and still-lifes, studied human portraiture and the figure, but the
animals kept appealing to her and appearing in her work.
Carol Santora is now best
known for her expressionistic animal paintings.
Internationally collected, her work has been exhibited in shows in New
England, New York City, California, Florida, Wyoming, St. Thomas USVI, and in
France. A Signature Member of the Pastel
Society of America, Santora has garnered numerous awards including First Place
Other Media: Pastel at the Susan K Black Art Show 2009 & 2008, and the
Headwater's Purchase Prize, Dubois, Wyoming, 2009 in addition to over four dozen other
1st Place, Peoples Choice and 'Best in Show' awards.
Santora has traveled
throughout New England and Wyoming studying animals in the wild and in
protected environments. Santora shares her artistic voice and vision,
celebrating animals in an explosion of color.
She has taught from her studio and at various schools and museums, and
is a requested judge and demonstrator for diverse groups and audiences
including amateur and professional painters, and pet owners.
Medium:
Pastel; acrylic.
Subjects:
Animals, domestic and wild.
Style: Representational.
Carol takes hundreds of photographs and spends countless hours watching the
animals that inspire her paintings. Her work is grounded in representation, but
she is not bound by that. As she works, a completely realistic depiction gives
way to a more artistic, contemporary rendering that serves her colorist and
expressive purposes.
