Bio: Mary Muller was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1934, and graduated from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois with a B.A. in Studio Art, in 1956.
After marriage and five children, she returned to art and studied with Dimitar Krustev and Robert Brackman. She taught at the Des Moines Art Center for twenty years, and still teaches painting and drawing in her home studio, and continues her own work. Drawing about 1000 portraits in art festivals and fairs, (including some for for Iowa State University's Agricultural Dept., the Law School at Drake University, Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson for the Governor's office at the end of her administration, and several for Planned Parenthood), being represented by several art galleries, and travelling in Mexico and Europe on painting trips has kept her busy and fulfilled. Mary was awarded Master Pastellist status by the PSA in 2013 and she was a winner in the members-only competition of the Portrait Society of America in 2015. Mary has also created a series of 3 DVDs consisting of the first 10 lessons she teaches in her studio classes, and is on YouTube (see below)
In 2004 Mary began teaching art lessons at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (ICIW) in Mitchellville, 20 miles east of Des Moines. Her goal was to find among the inmates women who had the talent and the drive to develop an expression of art to be relied upon for future income and personal development upon leaving the prison.
