Bio: Anne Laddon graduated from Occidental College in 1966 with a BA in Art History and Philosophy. She continued her studies at Masters level in Art History and Aesthetics at UCLA. Anne has been a professional artist for 40 years, beginning her career in a San Francisco ad agency as a graphic designer. She exhibited her work in New York each year at the International Art Expo there, as well as in galleries in Philadelphia and Washington D.C.
Laddon was introduced to pastels by Master Pastellist Bill Hosner. With the pure, luscious color and immediacy of the medium she was hooked! Pastels allow her to create quick studies in unlikely locations (barrooms, kitchens, fairgrounds, concerts). Capturing these spontaneous moments present challenges to be addressed later in her Paso Robles studio.
In 2007 Anne found the non-profit Studios on the Park organization in Paso Robles.
As a plein air enthusiast, Anne Laddon has adjusted her painting supplies over the years to make her plein air toolkit as mobile as possible. “I really like to keep the weight down, especially in Mexico, where I’m walking on cobblestone streets up and down and all across town,” she says.
Laddon uses a small rolling suitcase to transport her plein air toolkit, which consists of the following essentials:

  • Two small Heilman boxes with assorted pastels, mostly Holbein and Rembrandt;
  • Light gray pastel pencil;
  • Lightweight tripod easel;
  • Camera;
  • A box with a shoulder strap to hold sheets of 12×16-inch Sennelier La Carte mid-tone paper and a sturdy piece of black Fome-Cor as a painting board.
Anne’s work was featured in the September/October 2016 issue of the Pastel Journal.
